One of the lesser known video game series is the Parasite Eve franchise. If one game series deserves to be brought back, this is it. Hopefully after reading a little bit about Parasite Eve and Parasite Eve II it will motivate you check out these awesome games.
Parasite Eve
The first game takes place over a six-day span in New York City in 1997. The incident starts on December 24 and ends on December 29. The game begins with Aya Brea, an NYPD rookie, attending an opera at the Carnegie Hall with an unnamed date. During the opera, everyone in the building spontaneously combusts, except for Aya, and an actress on stage named Melissa Pearce.
The actress later identifies herself as an entity named Eve who is trying to evolve everything she comes into contact with to their highest evolutionary potential. Aya Brea and her partner Daniel must spend the next six days figuring out who the paranormal creature Eve is and how to stop her before she mutates all of the animals in the city into horrible creatures and makes all people she comes into contact with burst into flames.
Parasite Eve's mechanics are simple, yet elegant. From combat to level advancement, the game runs easily and smoothly, making it ideal for someone new to role-playing games (RPGs). Experienced RPGers should still enjoy it for its brilliant storyline.
Technically speaking, the game's graphics and sound are good, but not spectacular. The full-motion cutscenes are superbly done. Parasite Eve is a good game--there's just not enough of it. While it doesn't feel crammed together, the story seems to resolve quickly. Brilliant while it lasted, Parasite Eve left me wanting more. --John Cocking

Parasite Eve II
The second game opens to reveal that Aya Brea is now an FBI operative of the Mitochondrial Investigation and Suppression Team (MIST). She is sent on an urgent mission in central Los Angeles, where there have been reports of Neo-Mitochondrial Creature sightings. Through her investigations into the outbreak she discovers that the NMCs can take on human form. She eventually encounters a different type of creature; a humanoid Artificial Neo-Mitochondrial Creature (ANMC) called Golem No. 9.
As Aya continues her investigation she meets with a survivor named Mr. Douglas and his dog, Flint. Mr. Douglas acts as her source of news and equipment for much of the game. After encountering more NMCs and ANMCs Aya rescues Kyle Madigan. Kyle is a private investigator who claims he is on a mission similar to Aya's. He tells her about "The Shelter", a nearby underground facility that may hold the answers to the recent outbreak of NMCs. Aya and Kyle spend the rest of the game attempting learn about the NMC outbreaks and their connection to a research program that is behind them.
SquareSoft has kept some of the excellent elements of the weapons systems from the first Parasite Eve title, but went for an entirely new battle system. Combat is delivered in real time and allows players to run, hide, and open fire. Aya can tap into her parasitic powers and can unleash elemental, magic-based attacks on the many foes she encounters. Ammunition is plentiful in the game and there are plenty of entertaining weapons to choose from. Auto targeting and involving puzzles are back, though the arrow-pointing interface for solving these puzzles is really hard to operate.
The cinematic mix of story and action is very well done, and the numerous cutscenes do an excellent job of moving the pace along in a believable way.
Even though the original Parasite Eve had its problems, SquareSoft has pieced together an excellent sequel that will satisfy fans of the first game and help create many new ones. --Todd Mowatt
